Bori is located in the area of Sesean Mountain. This place is used by Toraja people to hold death ceremony or usually named Rambu Solo’. There are about 102 menhirs (standing stone pillars) with different size at this site. These menhirs are made to honor custom leaders or noble family that buried in this place. Some of these pillars attain the age of hundred years.
It is not easy to build menhir. There is a traditional ritual called Rapasan Sapurandanan that Toraja people should do first in order to build menhir. In this ritual, Toraja people sacrifice minimum 24 buffalos. It is not an easy job to make these pillars. People must go to the mountain to find the fit material and carving it on the location. It takes about 1 until 2 months for sculptor to finish one pillar. After the process of carving finished, people must work together to bring this pillar into the ceremonial place. They use tree rod and rope made from bamboo as their tools. To bring this pillar to the ceremonial place may take days even weeks.
You can also enjoy beautiful scene in this place because it is surrounded by mountains and traditional houses. Many international tourists who came to Toraja already visit this place. You can rent a car or use public transportation to go to this place.
So if you interested to see or to join in this ceremony, you can come to Toraja and visit Bori. Usually the ceremony hold in the mid-year but it also depends on the family who want to make a ceremony for their family.
